The Pulse of the Perlovska River – Revitalizing Sofia’s River Corridors

Implementation period
24.08.2024 – 15.11.2024

The project “The Pulse of the Perlovska River – Revitalizing Sofia’s River Corridors” is implemented with the financial support of Sofia Municipality Programme “Europe” 2024 by The Collective Foundation in partnership with the Triaditsa, Vitosha and Kremikovtzi districts.

Project Description:

The project unites the efforts of citizens, organizations and local government in addressing the challenges facing the Perlovska River. It aims to inform and engage the local community in effective and holistic management of water resources, focusing on current issues, but also taking into account emerging climate change. In addition, the project studies the tributaries of the Perlovska River and assists in their initial or more accurate mapping. As a final outcome, a report of the project results and a strategic document have been produced, which proposes concrete solutions for socialisation and sustainable management.

Within the project we mapped the Perlovska River and its tributaries using remote sensing and field survey methods. At the end of August 2024 we held a community event to promote the biodiversity of the river and organized a conference “The Pulse of the Perlovska River – revitalizing Sofia’s river corridors”, where we talked about the results of the mapping.

We produced a report on the state of the river describing the results of the survey, as well as a video related to the current state of the Perlovska River, its tributaries and illegal discharges into it. We have created an information map detailing the river, its tributaries, and future development opportunities, which we will place along the river. We have also created an online interactive map where city residents can enter features, damages, and map centerlines of the river and its tributaries.

On November 15 we organized a second conference – “The future of the Perlovska River – a model for sustainable management of Sofia rivers”, where we announced the results of the research and signed a memorandum on the sustainable management of the Perlovska River.
