The Collective

The Collective unites citizens, experts, and institutions in initiatives that improve our shared environment in Bulgaria.

The foundation was established in 2020 with the aim of transforming neglected urban sites into vibrant public spaces. We work with young people, university students, volunteers, artists, and design specialists from various parts of the country. Cities belong to everyone, and together, we create their future!

Each urban space is shared by different groups of people. We believe that development together with them is the key to long-term change.

We believe that rapid, even temporary changes generate energy and awaken even bigger dreams. We create urban interventions that are beautiful, functional and have a positive impact on the environment, the community and the local economy.

We believe in the power of the arts to transform cities and bring people together. We help local talents in each city to change their environment.

2024

Second place at the European Union Awards for Ecological and Engaged Design “New European Bauhaus” – Concrete to Culture (100 chairs on the rooftop)

Winner of the national stage of the European Youth Prize “Charlemagne” – for the initiative Academy for Urban Spaces

The festival “Rivers of the City – Gabrovo: Youth Stories Against the Current” received an award in the “Festival” category at the ProCulture Awards, granted by the Bulgarian Association of Employers in Culture (BAROK) and the Civic Institute. The recognition is for contributing to young people’s access to culture and is shared with the Municipality of Gabrovo

2023

First place at the European Union “New European Bauhaus” Awards – for the project Design on the Danube / Danube Design Lab

Special award from the international jury of the Bulgarian Architecture Awards, granted by the Chamber of Architects in Bulgaria – for 100 Chairs on the Rooftop

Second prize in the national competition “City Lovers” by Kapital newspaper and the British Embassy – for the overall initiative 100 Chairs

International BIG SEE Tourism Design Award, awarded by the Slovenian organization Zavod Big – for the initiative Rivers of Sofia

2022

Grand Prix at the European Heritage Awards / Europa Nostra Awards – for the initiative Rivers of Sofia

Finalist at the European Union “New European Bauhaus” Awards – for the initiative Rivers of Sofia

Winner with the citizens’ votes in the Sofia Municipality competition “Sofia Chooses Green” for the idea of a public space along the Sofia rivers

Award for “Event of the Year in the Field of Culture” from the People’s Community Center “Buditelite” 2017 – for the initiative Rivers of the City Gabrovo – in collaboration with the Youth Center Gabrovo

2021

Winner of the international competition “2021 Idea Challenge” of the German program Civic Europe with our initiative in Ruse

Award from Sofia Municipality for outstanding achievements in the field of culture, in the category “Architecture, Cultural Heritage Preservation, and Aesthetics of the Urban Environment” – for the initiative Rivers of Sofia
