Far to the east, in Japan, there is a belief that damaged pottery is not irreparable, and that restoring it is an art in itself. In our reality, the rapidly developing urbanization takes its toll from the surrounding nature, causing permanent damage to ecosystems and people, while the main part of the efforts to preserve the natural appearance and function of urban environments is yet to come. In the same context, rivers, as living arteries in the hearts of cities, could serve as a social and cultural bond, facilitating the movement, so far with art, and the contact of the inhabitants of urban spaces with nature. Today’s missed opportunities in this regard can serve as a lesson for us to build more sustainable future solutions for the integration of rivers and nature in cities… in other words – kintsugi.
